Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center (UC San Diego Alpha Clinic)

University of California San Diego Health centre that treats patients inside regulated cell and gene therapy clinical trials, not through paid private procedures.

Medical Disclaimer: This profile is compiled for informational purposes only and is not medical advice, a clinical endorsement, or a statement that any treatment is proven or approved. Stem cell therapies vary widely in regulatory status and evidence. Consult a qualified physician before pursuing treatment.

Overview

The Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center is part of UC San Diego Health, the academic medical centre of the University of California, San Diego. It houses the UC San Diego Alpha Clinic, one of nine Alpha Clinics funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the state agency created in 2004 to support stem cell research.

This is not a private clinic selling procedures. It treats patients as participants in clinical trials of cell therapy, gene therapy and other regenerative medicine treatments, both as inpatients and as outpatients. Access is therefore through trial eligibility rather than by booking an appointment, and patients need to meet the entry criteria of a specific study.

The centre also houses the Strategic Advisory Research Team, known as START, which supports researchers through the preclinical stage of work leading to first-in-human studies. It is supported by the Division of Regenerative Medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Named disease areas include spinal cord injury, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

Cost and Payment

No prices are published. Treatment here is delivered within clinical trials rather than sold as a private procedure, so costs are handled differently from a commercial clinic. Ask the study team what, if anything, a participant pays.
