Almost all are private orthopaedic, sports medicine and regenerative practices. Bone marrow concentrate is named most often, followed by umbilical cord products, exosomes, fat-derived cells and amniotic products. Knee, shoulder, back and hip pain and arthritis are the conditions listed most often.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has approved very few stem cell products, mainly blood-forming stem cells from umbilical cord blood for disorders of the blood. Treatments that use a patient's own minimally processed cells in the same procedure, such as bone marrow concentrate, can be offered without that approval. Donor products such as umbilical cord, amniotic and exosome products are different: the FDA has warned patients that many of these are unapproved, and it has received reports of serious side effects.
